Description

Unlike the majority of lone sailors, John MacGregor had an instinctive showmanship and a genius for publicity, whether he was advocating the kilt, inventing the Rob Roy canoe, or persuading the Prince of Wales to be first president of the Royal Canoe Club. His canoeing propaganda spurred Napoleon III ‘to encourage a taste for the exploration of solitary streams and lonely currents among the youth of France’ by holding in 1867 a ‘Boat Exhibition’ in Paris with a regatta on the Seine.
