Description
An ideal book for the seafarer or the landlubber who craves the smell of Stockholm tar – who wishes to be willed away by the sound of the wind in the sails of a square-rigged ship.
Mr Hurst concerns himself more with the mysterious voices of the ocean and their interpretation than with individual sailing ships and their crews. The author does discuss some of the epic voyages under sail, however, and he obverses that the true yachtsman, like his forbears in sail, can no more “bind the sweet influences of Pleiades or loose the bands of Orion” than the ancient shipmen who first sailed the five oceans.
