Description
Travel advertisements in the daily newspapers attracted as much attention at the beginning of the century as they do today; that they offered a much narrower choice of holidays made them no less exciting, for a trip to the Bay of Islands in 1904 was as much an adventure as a trip to Fiji or Vanuatu today.
An exciting and much talked about holiday was the summer cruise of the steamship Ngapuhi; between 1904 and 1908 it sailed regulary each summer from Auckland to Doubtless Bay and back. The fifty or so passengers were able to explore the mysteries of Great Barrier Island and experience the sense of recent history to be found at Russell; the beautiful Bay of Islands was unspoiled; Whangarei Heads from the sea were a splendid and inspiring sight; to voyage as far as remote Doubtless Bay was something to talk about for years and the whole trip remained a vivid lifetime memory.
