For almost four years Harry Pidgeon roamed alone around the world in the Islander, a 34-foot hard-chine yawl he built himself. His navigation he learnt from the public library. His travels took him from Los Angeles to the Marquesas Islands, to Tahiti, and Samoa, Fiji, and the New Hebrides with the strange hamil devil-worship of Atchin Island; on via New Guinea to the Torres Strait, where Islander followed Joshua Slocum’s route to the West Indes.
