Description

The story of how Bill, winner of the 1974 Trans-tasman single handed race, New Plymouth to Mooloolaba, Queensland, had started in the 1978 race but had gone missing. The media ran the story of the race’s organisers reluctance to institute a search. The eventual air search located Bill’s Josephine II on the notorious Middleton Reef, but HMAS Swan could find no trace of Bill and the life raft.

The story culminated when, after 28 days of drifting in the raft, Bill was picked up by a Nauru-bound ship. The book alternates between Bill’s story, and that of his wife Aileen, waiting with anxiety and frustration for news of her husband.
