Description
This book is the most complete and comprehensive guide to sail making and repairs that we have yet come across. It is suitable for novices and professionals alike, and focuses on the design, making, repair, and maintenance of cruising boat sails. The author tells you how to select a rig, introduces you to sail shape and theory, and then shows in step-by-step illustrations (over 700 of them) how to sew patches, hand sew rings, fix torn or frayed edges and stitch seams, not to mention how to make your own sails, sail covers, and sailbags. The Sailmakers Apprentice goes into making sails from gaff to bermudan, including loose footed sails. There are diagrams of cloth layouts for the various types of sails and there are chapters on sail shapes and theory, there are tables on the cloths and their specs.
There is a huge amount of information in the “making your own sails” section, beginning with how to measure – its very comprehensive.
An aspect that we particularly liked was the addition of a number of question-and-answer pages dispersed throughout the various chapters: “Dear Sailing Doctor – Can I wash my sails in a large laundromat washing machine?”
