Description

Between 1947 and 1968, the English publisher Rupert Hart-Davis published The Mariner’s Library. The library is 47 ‘salt-water’ books, all related to sailing, adventure and exploration. Most are true stories.

This one is Number 28: THE FIGHT OF THE FIRECREST, by the French sailor and tennis champion Alain Gerbault (1893-1941). It was originally published in 1929. It is the story of a great nautical adventure involving the first solo crossing of the Atlantic from east to west in 1923. A terse story of the hardships and delights that the ocean environment brings. You can almost smell the sea salt in some passages.
