Description

In February 1797, the merchant vessel Sydney Cove was on a speculative trading voyage from Bengal, India, to the infant colony of Port Jackson, New South Wales. Near the end of the trip, the ship foundered off Preservation Island, Bass Strait, in the aftermath of a hurricane.

Having survived a long ordeal in uncharted waters, a sinking ship, and horrendous storms during which three of the crew died at the pumps, the crew and the cargo were saved from the wreck, but stranded off the north-east coast of Van Diemen’s Land. Their only hope of survival was to send some of their number off in the ship’s longboat to Port Jackson to raise the alarm.
