Description
In 1976 James Siers made an incredible voyage of 1500 miles from Tarawa to Fiji in an outrigger canoe. In 1977, the voyage continued in a new vessel. Unlike the first one, which was built traditionally by village crafts-men, the second canoe was a marvel of modern technology. It was built to last, but it did not.
On August 8th, the beams connecting the outrigger float with the hull snapped in a heavy sea, some 200 miles east of Niue. The canoe fell on its side. It was decided to abandon the hull. After two weeks of drifting about in a small rubber life raft, Siers, his 10-year-old boy, Conrad, and five others were picked up by a passing ship. This is the story of an incredible adventure; of a vision nearly realized and the final sweetness of life.
