CAPTAIN'S QUICK GUIDES, thirteen guides namely: Rules of the Road and Running Light Patterns; Knots, Splices and Line Handling; Using GPS; Using VHF and SSB Radio; Emergencies On Board; Sail Trim and Rig Handling; Onboard Weather Forecasting; Heavy Weather Sailing; Boat Handling Under Power; How to Rad a Nautical Chart; Anchoring; Diesel Engine Care and Repair; Emergency First Aid on Board.

By Well-known marine experts including John Rousmaniere, Bob Sweet, Charlie Wing, Bill Gladstone, Nigel Calder.
Laminated, folded charts, fully open 430mm x 470mm, each one 16 panels, full colour illustrations.
These are excellent publications for students preparing for exams as well as for practical sailors at sea in their vessels. The lamination means that the guides are fully waterproof and the absence of any spiral or other forms of binding means that the panels will not corrode or become separated.
The illustrations and narrative descriptions have been carefully distilled so as to include the body of knowledge needed by a small-craft mariner and by a student for nautical exams.

The inclusion of line-handling in the Knots and Splices guide is a first and is very useful. The Radio and GPS guides could in most cases be used as the operator's instructions, as an improvement on the average handbook.
Later additions to the series of Emergencies On Board and Heavy Weather Sailing offer practical, useful guidance. Both are in a check-list format that would suit someone wanting to act quickly and decisively in a difficult situation.

    REED'S MARINE ENGINEERING SERIES
    ADVANCED ELECTROTECHNOLOGY FOR ENGINEERS.
    By Edmund G. R. Krall. Pbk 140mm x 210mm, 664 pages, monochrome drawings.

This book is a companion to Volume 6 (Basic Electrotechnology for Engineers) and covers more aspects of the theory of Electrotechnology. The syllabus followed is close to that of Electrical Engineering for Marine Engineer Cadets (Phase 3) of the Alternative Training Scheme and covers more fully the requirements of the Department of Trade syllabuses of Electrotechnology for First and Second Class Marine Engineers.
It anticipates future extensions of these syllabuses and deals with Brushless A.C. Generators, Excitation Systems for marine alternators and semiconductor theory relating to the diode, transistor and the thyristor. It will also be of great value to students studying for the Extra First Class Engineers Certificate.
Numerous fully-worked problems are included in the text. Text examples and typical examination questions are privided - with solutions - for the student to attempt on his own. The subject matter has been treated in the order and in the manner in which it would be taught at a college and this book is thus complementary to lecture notes taken at such a college. It is for this reason that a.c. and d.c. theory is progressed simultaneously and the student is encouraged to advance his "electronics" knowledge at the same time as the individual a.c. machines are studied.

The book follows the same pattern as the other volumes in this series which has proved so successful: emphasis on basic principles, extensive illustrations, worked examples included in the text, practice examples at the end of each chapter and specimen exam questions at the end.
