    THE COMPASS-ROSE PLOTTER
Length 400mm width 130mm. Frosted surface for marking with 2B pencil.
This is our own design, based on the best designs of single arm protractor. The device is greatly enlarged from its original form, which was developed for knee top plotting on single engine fighters and in use during the second world war. I have not been able to find out from who or where this clever innovation originated.
This type of plotter has three major advantages over parallel rulers or navigational triangles, which need to be slid over the chart.
    • It reads directional information without movement over the chart.
    • It can be calibrated to read in degrees true, magnetic and compass.
    • It is very quick for co-ordinate plotting (ie. latitude and longitude), again without the need for sliding.

The plotter appears in a number of brands and for some years has been the industry standard in Britain, and most other European countries where yachting is a major pastime.
We sell 10 Compass-rose Plotters to every one set of parallel rulers. Our version, the Compass-rose Plotter, is adapted contain two other value adding features:

    • Distance can be measured from the chart by scribing pencil marks along the edge;
    • it includes a time, speed and distance table.

    THE PLOTTER PACK.

We believe that this kit is the best value added product in the Instruments page. It consists of the Compass-rose Plotter, the Divider/Pencil Compass, a 120 mm Douglas Square protractor, a 2B plotting pencil, eraser and sharpener, and a booklet on plotting. The pack is contained in a permanent wallet, which is strong, clear, document safe and cold proof. Each item has its own pocket. Including the wallet and booklet the retail price of the Plotter Pack represents a considerable saving compares to the full retail value of the contents. It has appeal for students, present givers and boaties setting up a chart table.

    THE COMPASS-ROSE DEMONSTRATOR
    Length 600mm, width 165mm.
This is our own design and is designed specifically to act as a classroom aid for teaching the use of plotters similar to the Compass-rose Plotter.
The contrasting and high visibility colours, and the large print of the scales on the base-plate and the Compass-rose disc allow the grids and digits to be read from the back of a normal sized classroom. The scales are simplified and enlarged versions of those used on the Compass-rose, plotter as described earlier on this page. However, the Compass-rose Demonstrator has a generic form and graduation that will make it an excellent tool for teaching the single-arm protractor in all of its various guises.
The advantages of the Demonstrator as an on-board chart plotting tool should not be overlooked. The reading accuracy is in no way diminished through its primary function as a classroom aid. It easily spans a standard sized chart and the clarity of the enlarged graduations make it very easy to read in poor light.
It is supplied with the same comprehensive instructions as the Compass-rose Plotter.

RITE IN THE RAIN, Outdoor Notebooks.
These notebooks are the answer to any boatie's prayer. The products are made from unique All-Weather Writing paper created to shed water. The notebooks originated in the field-survey industry and they are widely used throughout the world for recording field data in all kinds of weather. For best results use a pencil or an all-weather pen.
The application to a mariner is obvious; note-taking in the cockpit for a variety of needs including race and radio information, navigation and weather forecast recording, and much else.

    ULTRALIGHT DIVIDER/COMPASS.
Leg length 175mm (7 inches), weight .09Kms (3 oz) These robustly built dividers weigh only 3 oz. and are bulkier than standard brass single-handed and plain dividers. They are made in Germany of a coated marine alloy to be corrosion resistant. Gear-synchronised arms allow one handed use and the shape of the arms provides excellent point alignment. The center wheel and extension-bar construction allows for fast action; the coarse worm allows easy manipulation whilst the dividers will hold their span during practical use at the chart table. The Ultralight divider/compass features hardened stainless steel points and a replaceable point-to-pencil lead alternative, and thus it becomes a navigator's chart compass.

    SINGLE HANDED BRASS DIVIDERS.

This is a classic product, to be found on every well-equipped chart table. They are made of brass and other non-ferrous materials; the bow at the top allows the user to open and close the dividers after the manner of using chopsticks. The size specified (eg. 175 mm) is the leg radius from hinge to tip. We import from a premier manufacturer in Britain and unfortunately the retail price is subject to exchange rate changes.

    DIVIDER/COMPASS, student quality. 120 mm.
It is a standard pencil compass, with a stainless steel point provided as an alternative to the lead. The instrument is packed in the divider mode, in its own wallet with two 2B leads in a plastic capsule; it is intended as a low cost alternative for chartwork students. In a marine environment is probably best kept in the pencil compass mode (thus giving it a relatively dry life!).

LINEX PARALLEL RULER WITH CAPTAIN FIELD'S GRADUATIONS
These emulate top-of-the-line professional parallel rulers, as would be found in the hands of many professional ships officers today.
The Captain Fields scale can best be described as starting life as a 360° protractor, subsequently folded in half along the N/S axis and elongated to fit the length of the ruler. The scale is used against a meridian of longitude to read direction in degrees true; this eliminates the need to walk all the way to the compass rose.
The scale print on the ruler is much larger, and can be read with greater precision than the compass rose as printed on the chart. Few non-professionals are taught to use a Captain Fields scale, yet it is a very big improvement on the charted rose. Our rulers have a sheet giving directions on how to use the Captain Fields scale. Our experience is that the 400 mm version is by far the most popular.

As shown - fitted with aluminium arms.

These are also available with brass arms - illustrated as part of the presentation set above. They are without doubt the Rolls Royce of traditional chart-plotting instruments.

    PLAIN PARALLEL RULERS, 400mm.

These are ungraduated for the sake of economy. The 400 mm version suits most chart tables and desk tops, and is by far the most popular. If wanted for a bulk order we can supply as length 300 mm.

DOUGLAS SQUARE PROTRACTOR, 120 mm (for picture - see above).
This is a 360° protractor on a square, clear plastic base. In chartwork it can be used to plot direction from a meridian of longitude. It is most functional, however, in its use for plain paper plotting; eg. as a plotter for celestial position lines or radar targets. Larger squares, up to 300 mm, are available but are very expensive; in our experience the 120 mm version meets all normal needs. Customers for a large square could be well advised to consider the 390 mm sided Compass-rose Plotter as a very much cheaper and more utilitarian alternative.
The Compass-rose Plotter has similarities in application to the Douglas square.

    NAUTICAL PROTRACTOR.
This is a 360° protractor on a triangular, clear plastic base. Sometimes called "navigational squares" they are usually used as a pair, sliding one against the other across the chart. They are popular in Europe, Asia and in the USA where they replace the parallel ruler, more common on British and Commonwealth vessels.
Prices given here are for single units; if a pair is wanted please order two. Two sizes are available:

Larger size - 320mm along the diagonal.
