The following entries range from personal logbooks to high-capacity vessel logs. It can be taken for granted that in every case we stand behind the standards of general quality, appearance and presentation; it is a matter of layout, size, purpose and cost that are the elements of choice.

Boat owners are very picky about their logbooks; in my experience the ideal logbook can never be viably published since the print run could never extend beyond a single copy! The main preferences are for the size of the non-daily narrative sections. Some want almost nothing at all, whilst others look for plenty of recording space for details of their boat, its history, social activities and other affairs. The selection shown here differ in these respects and seem to meet a variety of popular needs in practice. One common element in all logbooks that we see is that they have two facing pages per day (except for the Log of Sea Service).

To this end we have shown a thumbnail of each logbook. By clicking on the picture you can view it full screen or down-load and copy it to a document. We also provide a screen-picture of the main content pages for similar use.

BOAT LOG. Two books in strong wallet; pbk, landscape 210mm x 149mm (A5).
This product is an entirely new concept in boating logbooks, designed especially for small power boats or "fizz-boats". These are mainly trailered and there are well in excess of 100,000 boat-trailers registered in New Zealand. Trailer-boaties are by far the most numerous and geographically wide-spread of all New Zealand boat owners.

The driving-station of a small motor launch most resembles that of a motor car and the design of the Boat Log is taken from a typical vehicle-owner’s manual. It is in two A5 logbooks held in a good quality, clear plastic wallet of a size that will stow comfortably in a dashboard locker.

The Equipment, Service and Radio Log(click to preview pages) is for recording ownership, mechanical and safety equipment, and a full record of servicing. It includes a full and up-to-date list, of all the New Zealand VHF marine radio stations operated by New Zealand Coastguard, Maritime New Zealand and by private operators. It also contains recommendations on essential equipment as approved by Maritime New Zealand and the Coastguard.

The 93 page Trip Log (click to preview pages) has a trip-by-trip check list for the boat’s equipment and for recording tide and weather information. It also has a narrative record.
The check list refers back to details of equipment in the Equipment Log and can be filled out by a family member as young as 10 years old, under adult supervision. In this way it is intended to involve the family and other passengers and steer them into safe habits!

The author, Rodney Leech, is a Coastguard cutter skipper and tutor, and is a seasoned boatie having owned or operated everything from small-power boats to launches and yachts.
The Boat Log has been prepared in consultation with and assisted by Coastguard Northern Region, Maritime New Zealand and other regional Coastguard and maritime organisations.

The Boat Log is available as a complete kit in a wallet, or as separate books:

CRUISING MEMORIES, A BOATER'S DIARY. Hbk, portrait 180mm X 260mm, fine quality tinted buff paper, gold blocking, 192 pages, 80 days.
This is one of our best selling logbooks. It represents the better of the "no frills" logbooks that some boat owners favour, in that it has only 6 pages which are printed for vessel particulars, guest and non-routine entries. It is one of only two logbooks that we carry which use a tinted paper stock.
The book has pleasing proportions and the navy blue type on a light buff paper is attractive.

INTERNATIONAL MARINE LOGBOOK. Hardback, 240mm X 185mm, medium cream paper, red cover with gold blocking, 224 pages, 109 days.
The red binding (after loosing the sash) with the gold blocking makes for an exceptionally handsom book. It is unusual in that the binding is along the top edge, whilst the presentation is landscape (see pictures above). It qualifies as "no-frills" in that there are 6 pages of introduction, including a handwritten example of a daily page entry, and the whole of the remainder is used for daily pages. The inside of the rear binder is used for permanent details of the vessel.

SEAFARER'S BOOK. hbk, portrait 176mm X 121mm, fine quality white paper, gold on blue cover printing, 64 pages, 108 personal entries. The logbook is supplied in a clear, strong, document safe, cold-proof plastic wallet.
This log follows the same pattern as the "seaman's book", in common use aboard commercial vessels worldwide. It is designed to be used by any mariner, commercial or leisure, who would like to keep a record of sea service in a form acceptable for certificate of competency purposes. It is of special application in the service-area between SOLAS merchant ships and pure leisure yachts, which is becoming a trade in its own right aboard such vessels as superyachts and charter boats. It has been approved as acceptible evidence by Maritime New Zealand and New Zealand Coastguard Boating Education. It is available also through Kelvin Hughes in the UK and Europe.

    LOGBOOK FOR CRUISING UNDER SAIL.
Hbk, 215mm x 305mm, 96 pages. The daily pages of this log are designed to record all the information needed by both skipper and navigator, while being both simple and foolproof to fill in. The layout allows you to choose between a 'fixed time' and 'flexi time' system of entering information; both methods are equally valid, but one will be more suitable for your type of sailing. 'Fixed time' is well suited to sailing vessels, which need regular, accurate records for Dead Reckoning and weather forecasting. The hourly routine of filling in the log helps to keep watch keepers alert. The'Flexi time' system is well suited to all vessels day sailing or coasting, when accurate weather records and DR plot are not needed. It is especially convenient for waypoint navigation.Samples of the two entry techniques are shown at the beginning of the logbook.
